Emergency care

Emergency care is the treatment of emergent medical conditions. It is generally performed in an emergency room, but can also refer to treatment in an ambulance. In addition to life-threatening conditions, emergency medicine physicians may treat patients with injuries or infections.

Emergency services we offer

Our emergency care team is equipped to treat a range of emergency conditions, illnesses and injuries.

Emergency care

As an Accredited Chest Pain Center and Primary Stroke Center, we offer you access to expert emergency medicine specialists and an on-call network of highly specialized physicians for heart attack and stroke care.

We are also proud to provide full-service emergency rooms specifically for women and children.

Heart attack treatment

A heart attack occurs when the blood vessels leading to the heart are blocked, resulting in less blood and oxygen reaching the heart muscle. When the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen, this usually results in chest pain — one of the most common symptoms of a heart attack.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Chest palpitations
  • Cold sweat
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Paleness
  • Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing
  • Unexplained anxiety
  • Weakness or fatigue

Stroke care

A stroke affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot or burst. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the oxygen it needs, so it begins to die.

It is important to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. The less time it takes for you to receive treatment, the more muscle can be preserved and enable a better recovery.

Act quickly if you or someone you know experiences any of these warning signs:

  • Confusion or trouble speaking or understanding
  • Difficulty seeing in one or both eyes
  • Loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause
