Emergency care

Emergency care is the treatment of emergent medical conditions. It is generally performed in an emergency room, but can also refer to treatment in an ambulance. In addition to life-threatening conditions, emergency medicine physicians may treat patients with injuries or infections.

Whenever you need us, our Rutherford County emergency room is always open. Our expert triage team will assess your condition as you arrive, while our experienced ER teams are specially trained to stabilize, manage and diagnose you if you have an acute illness or injury.

About our emergency department

Whether you need emergency OB/GYN care or need treatment for a heart attack, we ensure the shortest possible wait times for fast and effective care. Our ER provides care for adults and children experiencing all types of injuries and illnesses, including broken bones and severe cases of influenza (flu). Our emergency room offers:

  • 24/7 emergency services
  • Certified stroke care
  • Fast treatment for heart attacks
  • OB/GYN emergency care
  • Pediatric emergency care
  • Short average wait times

In addition to taking care of emergencies, we handle all after-hours admissions and outpatient testing.

Level III Trauma Center

Our hospital also has a Level III Trauma Center. This designation means we provide 24-hour coverage from emergency medicine physicians. Patients also have access to general surgeons and anesthesiologists for their emergency care. If you are taken to our emergency department because of a traumatic injury (serious or life-threatening injuries caused by an event or accident), you will receive the highest quality of trauma care possible.

What to expect at the emergency room

From your arrival to your discharge, here is what to expect during your visit.

Triage

Nurses help incoming patients, prioritizing care based on the severity of your illness or injury. This process is called "triage." Emergency rooms always treat people in critical condition first.

We will require the following information when you arrive:

  • The reason for your visit
  • Your driver’s license or another form of identification
  • Your name and date of birth
Provider exam

Next, you will be evaluated and treated by a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner. Emergency room physician assistants and nurse practitioners have advanced education and training to quickly evaluate, diagnose and treat medical emergencies.

Pretreatment

The triage nurse will perform some diagnostic checks to determine the severity of your condition. We may require laboratory testing (such as blood work) or imaging exams (such as X-rays) to fully understand your medical needs.

Exam room

After triage, you will be moved into an exam room. You may receive further assessment and treatment or, if necessary, be admitted to the hospital. Once your treatment is complete, the physician will prepare discharge paperwork so you can leave. Your nurse will give you written instructions on how to care for yourself when you get home, prescriptions (if applicable) and what follow-up treatment you may need.

Discharge

Before you leave, we will collect payment and insurance information. An emergency physician or nurse will also give you the next steps for your care, such as arranging a follow-up appointment with a specialist or meeting with your primary care physician.
