Symptoms and causes of chest pain

It can be difficult to know when chest pain is the result of heartburn, heart attack or something else, such as lung or digestive issues. The ER at TriStar Skyline will help diagnose and treat emergency heart issues.

Symptoms of chest pain

Sudden, unexpected chest pain can be a potentially life-threatening symptom or a warning sign of another condition. It can occur when your heart is not getting enough blood. It may also be more or less severe based on your pre-existing conditions. Chest pain caused by heart problems may come with other symptoms, including:

  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Pain radiating to your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw or back
  • Sweating

Causes of chest pain

Common heart problems that cause chest pain include:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart attack
  • Heart failure
  • Heart valve problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Atrial fibrillation

Types of chest pain include:

  • Stable angina - generally has a predictable pattern and intensity
  • Unstable angina - unpredictable pattern, more severe and intense
  • Variant angina - a severe, temporary spasm that suddenly occurs while resting

If you are experiencing chest pain, your symptoms could be a sign of a serious health condition. Call 911 or seek emergency care immediately.
