Sometimes patient care looks different — like creating space in TriStar Horizon's West Pavilion Lobby for a grandmother to be there to watch her granddaughter say "I do."
When Caroline and Wesley got engaged in November 2024, they chose May 16, 2026, as their wedding date. From the very beginning, Caroline had one non-negotiable: her grandmother — affectionately known as Missy — had to be there.
“My relationship with my grandmother is more like a best friend,” Caroline shared. “She is my grandmother, but she and my grandfather were such an active part of our lives...my grandmother and I are two peas in a pod. I’ve always been told that I’m her made over.”
Knowing Missy’s health could decline, Caroline had a contingency plan to move the wedding up if necessary. One month before the planned date, Missy was admitted to Horizon. Caroline looked at Wesley and said, “We’re getting married here.”
While she knew her grandmother was receiving exceptional care, Caroline didn’t want to look back with any regrets. “I didn’t want to look back and wonder what might have been if something happened,” she shared.
Caroline spoke with Missy’s nursing team, simply asking if it might be possible to get married in her room or the chapel. What happened next was extraordinary.
The nursing team immediately sprang into action, transforming the West Pavilion lobby into a beautiful wedding venue. Flowers were arranged, furniture was carefully repositioned, and members of the day shift volunteered to stay late to help get Missy ready. They remained by her side throughout the ceremony, ensuring she was comfortable and stable for every moment.
One of the most meaningful moments of the day came when Missy was able to sign the marriage certificate herself — a powerful symbol of her role in Caroline’s life.
We are deeply grateful that Caroline allowed us to be a small part of such a meaningful celebration. This story reflects the care our colleagues provide every single day. Healing is more than clinical expertise — it is helping families experience life’s most important moments together.
On May 16th, the wedding day Caroline and Wesley had originally planned, we thought of them, and of Missy. Caroline graciously shared a photo, and we are happy to report that her beloved Missy had been discharged from Horizon and proudly attended her granddaughter's wedding.
What an extraordinary memory and a story to treasure for years to come.
