Advanced PET/CT imaging for Alzheimer’s disease and prostate cancer detection expanded at TriStar Skyline Medical Center

New tests offered at TriStar Skyline come one year since opening the in-house PET/CT scanner.

TriStar Skyline Medical Center continues to expand access to advanced diagnostic technology with the addition of two new PET/CT imaging options — one for detecting Alzheimer’s disease and another for identifying prostate cancer.

The additions come as TriStar Skyline celebrates one year since opening its in-house PET/CT scanner, which has enhanced access and reduced wait times for patients. In that time, the hospital’s imaging team has expanded its capabilities to include these highly specialized scans, offering clearer, earlier answers for patients and physicians.

Advanced PET/CT for Alzheimer’s disease

This advanced brain scan helps doctors identify amyloid plaques, one of the defining features of Alzheimer’s disease. The PET/CT camera captures detailed images of the brain, helping doctors determine whether memory loss or confusion may be related to Alzheimer’s disease or another cause.

“Use of PET/CT imaging may allow doctors to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease earlier and with greater accuracy than in the past,” said John Witt, MD, vascular neurologist at TriStar Skyline. “This could lead to earlier and more effective treatment with the latest medications.”

Advanced PET/CT for prostate cancer

The prostate cancer scan uses a tracer that targets prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), a protein commonly found on prostate cancer cells. This allows doctors to identify whether the cancer has spread or returned after treatment, even at very small sites that may not appear on other imaging studies. The highly detailed, three-dimensional images help doctors stage disease more accurately and develop precise treatment plans.

Improving access and expanding capabilities

A doctor’s order is required for both exams. TriStar Skyline offers open scheduling for referred patients, ensuring fast and convenient access once an order is placed. Patients should talk with their doctor to learn if one of these scans may be right for them.

“Adding these new technologies marks an important next step in our imaging program,” said Brian Marger, chief executive officer at TriStar Skyline. “It reflects our commitment to investing in the most advanced tools available so our patients can receive world-class care close to home.”
