Heart and vascular surgery

Cardiovascular surgeons work to repair damage done to the heart and blood vessels. Damage can be caused by heart diseases or disorders, including heart failure and congenital heart defects. Surgery is a vital part of treatment for many heart conditions.

Our experienced cardiac surgeons use state-of-the-art techniques and technologies to perform:

  • Cardiovascular surgery — surgery on the heart and blood vessels
  • Thoracic surgery — surgery on the organs within the chest cavity, including the heart, lungs and esophagus

Nationally recognized heart care

Hospitals in our network have earned acknowledgement for extensive and effective cardiac care methods and procedures. Some of our facilities have received the following designations and recognition:

We have also been recognized for our cardiovascular team's “door-to-balloon” time, an emergency metric used to determine the amount of time it takes for a patient experiencing a heart attack to receive an angioplasty balloon procedure to open narrowed arteries. The national guideline for “door-to-balloon” time is 90 minutes and the national average has previously been around 76 minutes. TriStar Health facilities routinely outperform both figures, starting fast, effective treatment in less than 75 minutes.

Diagnostic procedures we offer

To determine when surgical intervention is necessary, we provide a wide range of heart imaging services and diagnostic procedures, including:

  • Angiography
  • Cardiac calcium scoring
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Cardiac stress test
  • Echocardiography
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Electrophysiology studies
  • Holter monitoring
  • Vascular ultrasound studies

Available cardiovascular procedures

Once a diagnosis has been accurately determined, we can form a proper treatment plan. In addition to adult care, our team of cardiovascular surgeons at The Children's Hospital at TriStar Centennial provides children with many of the same types of diagnostic and surgical treatment options as we do for adults. Some of the cardiovascular procedures provide include:

  • Coronary angioplasty — nonsurgical procedure that involves opening the narrowed artery with a catheter to allow normal blood flow back to the heart
    • Balloon angioplasty — a type of angioplasty that increases blood flow to the heart through a balloon that is inflated to push plaque aside
  • Cardiac ablation — a procedure that destroys old and malfunctioning heart tissue producing abnormal electrical signals that cause heart arrhythmias
  • Endovascular surgery — minimally-invasive procedure which balloons a narrowed blood vessel to reduce the risk of an aneurysm or other conditions
  • Heart stenting — a procedure, similar to a balloon angioplasty, that supports the artery walls that have been widened for increased blood flow and reduction of chest pain
  • Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) placement — surgical procedure to implant a device that is battery-operated and assists the left ventricle in pumping blood
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) — this minimally-invasive surgery repairs the heart valve by wedging an artificial replacement valve that takes over the original valve's job of regulating blood flow
