A Green Beret's Journey from the Battlefield to Healthcare
In Clarksville, Tennessee, retired Team Sergeant Ed Prescott of the 5th Special Forces Group has found a new way to serve — through his work at HCA Healthcare. With over 20 years in the military, Ed’s leadership style was shaped by moments of deep compassion, like when senior commanders asked about soldiers’ families by name during mission planning. That blend of empathy and excellence defines how he leads today.
Clarksville isn’t just where Ed and his wife Amanda live — it’s where they’ve built a life rooted in community and service. It’s where they chose to raise their daughter, drawn by the town’s strong support for the military families. Now, with TriStar Health planning a new hospital in Clarksville, Ed feels even more confident in the care available to his family and neighbors.
Ed believes veterans bring unique value to organizations like HCA Healthcare. “Leadership is the discriminator,” he says. While many have technical skills, it’s integrity, precision and the ability to truly listen that set veterans apart. For Ed, active listening is a cornerstone of trust and results.
The transition to civilian life wasn’t easy, but with the support of family, friends and veteran networks, Ed found his path. When he landed at HCA Healthcare, he was still navigating that transition. He calls HCA Healthcare his “safe landing zone” thanks to the unexpected support he received from his new HCA Healthcare family. Today, as a project manager in HCA Healthcare’s IT group, he’s inspired by the teamwork and dedication he sees across facilities. “They operate like a Special Forces team — everyone knows their role and executes flawlessly,” he said.
Though he’s not a doctor, Ed hopes to one day lead within a hospital or clinic, continuing to drive excellence in care. The announcement of TriStar Health’s expansion into Clarksville represents more than convenience — it’s a long-overdue investment in the community. “The nation’s finest and bravest at Fort Campbell will finally be treated by the best and brightest — right here at home,” he says.
