TriStar Health will host "Crush the Crisis" prescription drug take back events across Middle Tennessee on October 25, offering a safe, anonymous way to dispose of unused medications in partnership with local law enforcement. This initiative aims to prevent misuse and raise awareness about the opioid epidemic, which remains the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 44.

Nashville, Tenn. —  On Saturday, October 25, TriStar Health facilities across Middle Tennessee join HCA Healthcare hospitals nationwide in hosting “Crush the Crisis” prescription drug take back day events. In partnership with local law enforcement agencies, this event provides a safe, anonymous way for the community to dispose of unused or expired medications and raise awareness about the dangers of prescription drug misuse. Last year, TriStar Health facilities in Middle Tennessee collected 1,075 pounds of medication during the October 2024 “Crush the Crisis” events.

According to the CDC, overdose deaths in the U.S. dropped to approximately 87,000 between October 2023 and September 2024, the lowest 12-month total since June 2020. However, overdose remains the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 44, underscoring the need for continued action.

“While we are encouraged by the recent decline in overdose deaths, the opioid epidemic continues to devastate families and communities,” said Dr. Ajit Singh, chief medical officer at TriStar Health. “Events like ‘Crush the Crisis’ are vital in preventing misuse before it starts, by removing the source. Every pill collected is one less opportunity for addiction, and one more step toward improving human life by building a healthier, safer community.”

Since launching in 2018, HCA Healthcare’s Crush the Crisis events have collected more than 88,600 pounds of medications, equivalent to tens of millions of doses. In 2024 alone, more than 21,000 pounds were collected across more than 125 sites.

Accepted items include tablets, capsules, patches, medicated ointments, liquids in leak-proof containers, vape cartridges (without batteries) and pet medications. Needles, syringes, lancets and illegal drugs will not be accepted. For more information, visit the crush the crisis homepage or call toll-free number at (833) 582-1970.
