Learn about clinical trials
Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI) is one of the world’s leading oncology research organizations conducting community-based clinical trials. Focused on advancing therapies for patients over the last three decades, SCRI is a leader in drug development. It has conducted more than 850 first-in-human clinical trials since its inception and contributed to pivotal research that has led to the majority of new cancer therapies approved by the FDA in the past decade.
Types of clinical trials available
The number and type of active clinical trials available changes regularly. Your eligibility to participate depends on several criteria, including age, gender, your cancer type and stage, any previous treatments you may have had, and your overall medical history. If you’re interested in participating in a clinical trial, please talk with your doctor to determine if a trial may be right for you or search SCRI’s clinical trial database below.

Through our cancer research program, people with cancer can access the latest clinical trials close to home. As part of an expansive research network, we're working to advance therapies for patients and help transform cancer care in the communities where most people receive treatment.
FAQs about cancer clinical trials
What is a clinical trial?
A clinical trial is a medical research study. Cancer clinical trials are designed to answer specific scientific questions to improve the treatment and care of people with cancer.
Clinical trials may help researchers:
- Test new and better ways to prevent, screen for, diagnose or treat cancer
- Study an existing cancer treatment in a different type of cancer
- Determine whether an investigational therapy or procedure is more effective than an existing therapy or procedure
- Learn how to use approved treatments in new combinations to improve results
Clinical trials rely on volunteers, called study participants. Each participant is closely monitored with medical tests and exams before, during and after the trial. Safety is always a top priority. Clinical trials are strictly managed by the FDA, and therapies must meet rigorous requirements before they can be tested in people.
Why are cancer clinical trials important?
Today's clinical trials help shape tomorrow's treatment options. Many of the standard cancer treatments used today are based on results from previous clinical trials.
Cancer clinical trials are important because they can:
- Provide access to promising treatment options being studied
- Help patients contribute to medical knowledge and progress against cancer
- Generate data that may lead to new FDA-approved therapies that are more effective and/or better tolerated than current treatments
What are the types of cancer clinical trials?
Common types of cancer clinical trials include:
- Treatment trials: Test investigational medicines, medical procedures or combinations of treatments for various cancers
- Prevention trials: Look for ways to help prevent cancer through lifestyle changes (action studies) or through medicines, vitamins or other approaches (agent studies)
- Screening trials: Explore new ways to detect cancer earlier, when it may be easier to treat
- Quality-of-life trials: Study ways to improve comfort and quality of life for people with cancer
